Adolescents
(Ages 12-18)
Navigating the transition from childhood to adulthood is often awkward and emotional, and riddled with anxiety, rebellion, and angst. Many parents feel as though their brooding, aloof teenager is unrecognizable compared to the sweet, affectionate child they once knew.
While many therapists are intimidated by prospect of working with adolescents, I have found that when asked the right questions, teenagers make some of the best therapy clients. I approach my work with adolescents by bringing my authentic self to the session, taking time to build a strong therapeutic alliance, and working with my young clients to understand the function of their maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.
Adults
(Ages 18-35)
In today’s world, young adulthood is often a period ripe with both excitement and strife. During this time, many young people struggle with a host of issues from separating and individuating from their families and navigating career decisions, to solidifying one’s identity and traversing peer and intimate partner relationships. The burden of these developmental milestones can be particularly weighty for young people with a history of trauma.
In my work with young adult clients, I focus on reframing “undesirable” emotions as informative tools in decision-making and help my clients understand their thoughts and behaviors through the lens of their life experiences.
